How to broadcast a League of Legends tournament

A practical setup guide for university, club, and community tournaments. It works with OBS Studio and any other streaming software that supports scenes and browser sources. League Broadcast is used for the overlay examples.

  1. 1

    Set up your PCs

Run the League spectator client and your streaming software on a production PC. A recent CPU and dependable GPU are important when one PC handles spectating, encoding, and overlays. If you have a second PC, use it for streaming and capture the spectator PC.

  2. 2

    Create your scenes

Create separate scenes for champion select, in-game, break, and post-game. Add only the sources each scene needs. During the production, switch scenes as each phase begins.

  3. 3

    Set up the observer

The observer creates the custom lobby, checks team sides, and controls the in-game camera. League delays the spectator view by a few minutes. Casters should watch that delayed view so their commentary matches the broadcast.

  4. 4

    Add overlays as browser sources

Add the overlay URL as a browser source in each scene and set it to the canvas resolution. League Broadcast shows each local URL in the app.

See how League Broadcast works, then download it. The Free plan covers a first production.

  5. 5

    Audio

Mix caster microphones and game audio in your streaming software. A Discord call is enough for a first production. Check the balance from the private stream.

  6. 6

    Rehearse the production

Before match day, stream one full custom game with final settings to a private channel. Check:

    • Play a full custom game with final team names and rosters in the overlays.
    • Open each scene in order: champion select, in-game, break, post-game.
    • Confirm each browser source is rendering; reload any source that comes up blank.
    • Watch the private test stream on a phone to judge audio balance and overlay readability.
    • Have the casters commentate from the delayed spectator view and check it feels natural.
    • Agree who calls scene changes during the production, and on what cue.
